The moment seventeen-year-old Samantha Thompson crawls out of her grave, her second chance at life begins. She died of cancer with her long-time boyfriend, Ethan, by her side -- a completely unfair shot at life. But Ethan found a way to bring her back, like he promised he would. Only Sam came back wrong. She's now a monster that drains others' lives to survive. And after she kills, she's tortured by visions -- glimpses into her victims would have- been futures had she not killed them. Barely able to live with herself and trying to make things right, Sam ends up a pawn in a vicious game of payback within the local coven of witches. But when the game reveals what Ethan had to do to save Sam, she must make a choice that will change all their lives forever.
I loved the other series by this author so when I had the chance to review this one I jumped at it. The author took a widely used concept and made it her own for this book and I loved it. I think the fact that the main character comes back from the dead but isn’t the typical zombie was what worked for me. It was different from the normal brains eating zombies and gave the character a little more soul. We start this book out by meeting Sam who wakes up after dying and realizes that her boyfriend found a way to do so. I have to say that overall I liked Sam as a character but the fact that she was so willing to drop how she wasd brought back so easily didn’t work for me. I was expecting her to put up more of a fight with her boyfriend about it. As the story continues Sam quickly learns what she has to do to stay alive and it is not pretty. Sam also learns that her life as she knew it is over and she and her boyfriend Ethan have to move away and start a new life. I have to say that for teenagers these kids sure were able to get everything they needed to be on their own. I had a few moments that I thought everything was just falling together too easily for them but then a few strange events come along that changed it all for me. Sam soon has to figure out just what Ethan did to get her back and who may have been involved I think that I loved the second half of this book more than the first as it turned into more of a mystery and a race against time to figure it all out. Overall this was a nice read and I loved how it all tied up in the end. The author created a cool world and the town that this book was set in was a fun little small town where it seemed that most people knew others and I loved the Mom and Pop diner too. The characters after a while worked for me and I was able to overlook some of the things that aggravated me in the beginning. I will say this one started out a little slow for me but about half way in it picked up and I was hooked. I would recommend this to some of my zombie lovers that want a different spin on them.
