Oh my where has this book been all my life and why did I take so long to read it. This book was epic on so many levels and I can’t believe I took so long to get to it. First off the world of Baalboden was something amazing in itself as it was a city hidden behind a wall for protection from the Cursed One. I think that was what sucked me in because I wanted to know what happened that they ended up there and what was the Cursed One. The author created such a modern town but one that seemed to stand on old values with women needing protectors and not being able to travel alone and what was so refreshing was that in the midst of all this we meet Rachel who is different in so many ways. She refuses to follow the rules, is a fierce fighter and can stand up for herself regardless of the costs. We meet Rachel trying to plot a way out of the town to go find her father who hasn’t come back from one of his missions and is declared dead by the Commander. I could tell from the first few pages on this one that I was going to love it.
As the story continues we also get to meet Logan who I fell in love with from the start. I mean he was so smart and such an awesome inventor and was willing to take Rachel under his protection even though he was really just a kid himself still trying to learn his way. He was also so brave and selfless and I with all that he has been through it’s a wonder that he turned out as well as he did. Rachel and Logan soon decide they are going to devise a plan to get out of the city to find her father but they have to escape first and keep the Commander from learning of their plan. I of course from the start didn’t care for the Commander because he abused his power and was a horrible leader to his people and treated them like dirt basically. There are events that take place that send Rachel and Logan off on two different paths but one that makes you hope they will end up back together because they have the common goal of finding her dad and taking down the Commander.
Overall this was an amazing tale full of romance, action and betrayal mixed in. I loved every minute of it and the characters were so well thought out that you can’t help but to root for them and for them to come out on top. I also loved seeing Rachel and Logan slowly start to realize that they belonged together and needed each other to be strong. They were such an awesome team together and I can’t wait for what book two brings for them. I highly recommend this one to anyone that still hasn’t read this series and I am so glad that I grabbed the second copy also so I can dive right in because once this series grabs a hold of you it doesn’t let go.
